Sonora’s father, Smart William Jackson, was a Civil War veteran and he was a single parent who raised his six children on his own.

The existing celebration of Mother’s Day introduces the idea of Father’s Day. In 1909, the idea came into Sonora Smart Dodd’s mind of having a day dedicated to fathers as a way to honor her own father’s selfless dedication and love, while attending a Mother’s Day sermon.
